Across the UK solar industry, some customers are currently experiencing longer-than-usual waiting times for DNO paperwork, G98 registrations and G99 approvals.
While these delays can be frustrating, they do not necessarily mean there is a problem with your solar installation or that your installer has failed to submit the required information.
In many cases, the delay is caused by increased demand, administrative backlogs or the additional checks required to ensure solar systems can connect safely to the local electricity network.
What is a DNO?
Your Distribution Network Operator, commonly known as the DNO, is responsible for the electricity network in your area.
When solar panels are installed, the DNO needs to be informed because your system may send surplus electricity back to the grid.
Depending on the size and design of your solar system, this is normally handled through either a G98 notification or a G99 application.
What is the difference between G98 and G99?
G98
G98 normally applies to smaller systems that export no more than 16 amps per phase, which is typically around 3.68kW on a single-phase property.
These systems can usually be installed before the DNO is notified. The installer then submits the required notification after commissioning.
However, customers may still need to wait for the DNO to register the system and issue an acceptance letter. This document is often required by energy suppliers before they can activate a Smart Export Guarantee tariff.
This means that even when the installation has been completed correctly and the paperwork has been submitted, there can still be a delay before export payments begin.
G99
G99 generally applies to systems that exceed the G98 limits, including larger solar installations, certain battery systems and more complex solar-and-storage designs.
Unlike G98, most G99 applications need to be reviewed and approved by the DNO before the system can operate at its full proposed capacity.
The DNO may assess:
- The size of the proposed solar and battery system
- How much electricity the property could export
- The capacity of the local electricity network
- Voltage levels and potential network constraints
- Whether export-limitation equipment is required
Straightforward applications may be processed within several weeks, while more complex cases can take longer.
Why are delays happening?
There is no single cause affecting every customer or every part of the country.
Current delays may be linked to:
- A significant increase in solar and battery installations
- High volumes of applications being submitted to DNOs
- Administrative backlogs
- Requests for additional technical information
- Local network-capacity restrictions
- The need for further engineering assessments
- Potential network reinforcement work
Processing times can therefore vary depending on the DNO, the local area and the type of system being installed.
Does a delay mean something is wrong?
In most cases, no.
A delay does not automatically mean your application has been rejected or that there is an issue with the quality of your installation.
Your installer may have completed everything required and may simply be waiting for the DNO to process the application or provide the final documentation.
It is also important to understand that solar installers do not control DNO processing times. However, a responsible installer should submit the correct information, respond promptly to any technical queries and keep customers informed throughout the process.
Can your solar system still operate?
This depends on the type of application and the conditions set by the DNO.
A compliant G98 system can normally operate once installed and commissioned, although customers may need to wait for the acceptance documentation required to arrange export payments.
For G99 systems, the installation may need to wait for approval before operating at full capacity. In some situations, an export limitation may be agreed, allowing the system to operate while controlling how much electricity is sent back to the grid.
Each installation is different, so your installer should explain exactly what applies to your property.
What is LJM Solutions doing to help?
At LJM Solutions, we manage the DNO process as part of your solar installation.
We ensure the correct documents are submitted and actively monitor outstanding applications. Where necessary, we follow up with the relevant network operator and respond to any requests for further technical information.
Although we cannot control the DNO’s processing times, we will always keep you updated and provide honest information about the progress of your application.
Our team understands that customers want clarity, particularly when they are waiting to register for an export tariff. We will never leave you wondering whether the required paperwork has been submitted.
What should customers do while waiting?
If you are currently waiting for DNO paperwork, there is usually no need to take any additional action unless your installer asks you for further information.
You should:
- Keep copies of any installation and commissioning documents
- Wait for confirmation that the DNO has registered or approved the system
- Avoid submitting duplicate applications, as this may cause confusion
- Speak to your installer before contacting the DNO directly
- Prepare the documents required by your chosen export supplier
Once the DNO acceptance documentation has been issued, you can normally continue with your Smart Export Guarantee application.
Planning a new solar installation?
DNO processing times should not discourage homeowners or businesses from considering solar.
Solar panels can still help reduce electricity bills, increase energy independence and protect against future energy-price increases.
The important thing is to work with an experienced, accredited installer who understands the application process and can design a system that is suitable for both your property and the local electricity network.
At LJM Solutions, we explain the DNO requirements from the beginning, manage the necessary applications and keep you informed throughout your installation journey.
We are here to help
If your solar installation is currently waiting for a G98 acceptance letter or G99 approval, please be assured that delays are affecting customers and installers across parts of the UK solar industry.
A delay does not necessarily indicate a problem with your installation. In many cases, it simply means the DNO is still processing the documentation or completing the necessary network checks.
Our team will continue to monitor outstanding applications, communicate with the relevant DNO and update customers as soon as further information becomes available.
